  • Buy, Sell, or Keep: Seattle Seahawks Offense

The Seattle Seahawks are in flux right now after trading away Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson. They have Drew Lock and possibly Baker Mayfield to lead them now. Who becomes the Buy/Sell/Keep from the Seahawks offense now?

    Buy

    Noah Fant, TE

Noah Fant was the first-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2019. He was a key member of the trade package sent to the Seattle Seahawks for Russell Wilson. Another member of the Broncos sent in that package was QB Drew Lock. Lock and Fant came into the NFL together in 2019.

This will be Fant and Lock's fourth year together. A puzzle piece yet to be decided is whether or not the Seahawks bring competition into the QB room besides Geno Smith. Will there be an eventual trade for Baker Mayfield?

If Lock is the starting QB in 2022 for the Seahawks, here are some numbers to show what you might expect from Fant. In their 19 games together that they both started, Fant had 67 receptions for 905 yards. Those are top 12 numbers for a TE in any fantasy football league.

If Mayfield ends up with the Seahawks, he completed 33% of his 558 completions to his tight ends over the last two years. Over 1/3 of Mayfield's passes went to his tight ends. Either way, Fant will be targeted.

You need to buy him now. The fantasy football community is very down on Lock. With the community being down on him, they are then down on Fant. That brings Fant's value down which in turn brings his price down in fantasy football. Go get him now, before you know what the final QB room will look like in Seattle.

    Sell

    Rashaad Penny, RB

Rashaad Penny was a first-round draft pick by the Seahawks in 2018. Chris Carson has been the top RB on the depth chart for a few years but is battling a neck injury that had him miss the final 13 games last year. Penny was returning from his own injury and finally got on the field for more than single-digit carries in Week 13.

Penny's five-game stretch to end the 2021 season was one of the best five-game stretches in NFL history. In week 14, Penny had 16 carries for 137 yards and 2 TDs. Week 15 was just modest at 11 carries for 39 yards. Penny bounced back big time in week 16 with 17 carries for 135 yards and 1 TD.

Week 17 got even better as he delivered with 25 carries for 170 yards and 2 more TDs. Penny put an exclamation mark on his five-game stretch in week 17 with 23 carries for 190 yards and yet another TD.

The old saying is what have you done for me lately? That is what is in everyone's mind these days. Penny just put himself into the starting RB conversation in all fantasy football leagues. Coach Pete Carroll has already stated that Penny deserves the first shot at the starting job. Nobody knows for sure about Carson's neck issue and if Penny will have any real competition.

Why sell Penny now with his recent five-game history?

Penny has played in 37 of a possible 65 games in his four-year career. He has only played 23 games of his last possible 49 games. Penny has only carried the ball 280 times for 1,572 yards in four years. Penny is ranked as high as the 22nd RB in dynasty. The greatest ability is availability which is not a strong suit for Penny. Sell him now while the value is at its peak. Do not wait for him to get hurt in training camp or flop in Week 1.

    Keep

    D.K. Metcalf, WR

    D. K. Metcalf is a freak of nature who was drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Seahawks. After a solid rookie season in which he posted 58 receptions for 900 yards and 7 TDs, he blew up in 2020. Metcalf delivered with 83 receptions for 1,303 yards and 10 TDs. He skyrocketed to the top three WRs on most dynasty fantasy football rankings lists following that 2020 year.

Unlike 2020, 2021 was a challenging year for Metcalf. All systems were a go for the first five games of last year. He posted 25 receptions off of 38 targets for 383 yards and 5 TDs. Then, Wilson broke his finger and missed three games, and most definitely came back before he was ready to throw the football as Wilson does. Metcalf finished the season with 75 receptions for 967 yards and a very nice 12 TDs.

Why is everyone down on Metcalf?

In his final 12 games of 2021, Metcalf only had 50 receptions for 584 yards. Those stats were accomplished with Geno Smith and a broken-fingered Wilson as his QBs. This year, he will have Lock or possibly Mayfield, both of whom like to sling the ball downfield.

My recommendation is to keep Metcalf and reap the rewards. He did not regress in 2021. His QBs regressed in 2021. You can not get his value returned in any possible trade out there. Keep him on your rosters until at least the mid-2022 season.
