Cam Newton was cut by the New England Patriots, solidifying rookie Mac Jones as the starter for the 2021 opener.

In a surprise move, the Patriots cut Cam Newton this morning. Newton missed a few days due to Covid protocol last week but was still believed to be the starter for the beginning of the 2021 season.

    Patriots Outlook

I always thought that the best play for the Pats was to start Mac Jones this year. It looks that they finally came to their senses. The ceiling of the Pats with Newton seemed low, but it seemed they would roll with him. Jones must have shown enough in his three preseason games to give the coaches confidence to let Newton go.

Jones should give the team the ability to throw the ball down the field more and open up the offense compared to 2020. With the revamped defense, the Patriots could be in the hunt for a playoff spot, even with the rookie QB.

    Fantasy Implications

Cam Newton had over 500 yards and 12 rushing TDs last year, and Mac Jones is not the same dual-threat. Damien Harris suddenly is more interesting in 2021 as a possible top 24 RB since Sony Michel was traded and there will be more goal-line carries.

Nelson Agholor should also benefit since he will be the deep threat on the team and Jones — through preseason — showed great touch on long passes. Even with a better passing QB, the Patriots' offense most likely will stay balanced. I think Mac Jones could be intriguing in SF leagues as a QB2.
