What's the impact of the big trade that sent New York Jets’ superstar safety Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks? A look at how this change of scenery could impact your fantasy teams.
It has been hard times with this Covid-19 pandemic trying to ruin everything we love, especially football. However, the NFL has stayed the course and continued their plans for this season. Now, just days away from players reporting, there is some excitement in the air. Speaking of excitement, we just had a huge trade in the NFL that will change the fortunes for all parties involved. A change of scenery for a player can be a good thing, or it can be a turn for the worse, so let’s take a look at the who, what, when, where, and why of this trade.
The news just broke this Saturday evening that the New York Jets traded superstar strong safety Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks. The big-time trade wasn’t a cheap one for Seattle - in exchange for receiving Adams and a 4th round pick in 2022 in the deal,  Seattle sent back safety Bradley McDougald, a 1st round pick (2021), a 3rd round pick (2021), and a 1st round pick (2022). While that seems like a lot, it is the going rate for a top NFL defender. Just in the past few years, trades of defensive stars like Khalil Mack and Jalen Ramsey have returned multiple 1st round picks to their former employers. Will this change of scenery for Adams pay off for him and Seattle? Only time will tell.
The Jets drafted Adams in the 1st round with the 6th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. In his three seasons in New York, Adams played in 46 of a possible 48 games. He produced 272 total tackles, 210 solos, 28 tackles for a loss, 12 sacks, six forced fumbles, four recoveries, one returned for a touchdown, 25 pass breakups, two interceptions, and one returned for a touchdown. The 2X Pro Bowler and 1X All-Pro has been nothing short of special for the J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! Even when things are going so well on the surface, we don’t always see the problems that lie hidden beneath. For Adams, he couldn’t hide his frustrations with team leadership any longer and began asking to be traded.Â
Adams’ reason for the request wasn’t about the Jets‘ poor performance, but rather how the team was being run. Adams voiced his displeasure with both head coach Adam Gase and general manager Joe Douglas. However, the real reason this all came to light is that he wanted a contract extension. For whatever reason, the Jets have failed or refused to engage in extension talks. Adams he got what he wanted With the trade, now we’ll see if the change of scenery gets him paid.
The Seahawks are getting a much needed superstar at a position they’ve been band-aiding for the past few years. Since the Legion of Boom days ended, with Cam Chancellor at the position, they have had a void at safety they haven’t been able to fill, until now. With Adams in this role, their issues and worries will be a distant memory. Adams gives Seattle that enforcer on the back end of the defense, who can also come down and play in the box when needed. His versatility and elite skill set provides Seattle with so many different options of attack. The only thing the Seahawks have to think about now is getting Adams locked up long term.
Expectations for fantasy players shouldn’t change at all. Adams will continue to be that superstar boxscore filling machine we have all come to love. He’s still young and just entering his prime, so him being even better going forward is certainly a possibility. He will continue to give his fantasy teams everything they desire, from tackles to sacks and everything in between. He’s not a DB1, he is the DB1. He  will cost you a lot to acquire him in a trade, especially in balanced scoring leagues. If you already have him and are willing to trade him, be patient and don’t settle for just anything. Make and pursuers pay that premium if they want Adams on their team.
