Dynasty Football: 2023 Offseason Buy and Sell Candidates

Fantasy football never stops in dynasty leagues. What players are we buying and selling this "off-season"?

The 2023 fantasy football off-season has arrived. With addicts like myself, the off-season is the best part of dynasty football leagues in fantasy. There are no breaks. With the stacked 2023 rookie class soon arriving like Thanos in infinity war, now is the time to capitalize on young assets as others focus on the upcoming rookies.

Here are some players I will buy and sell from an upcoming stacked running back free agent class, along with young wideouts seeking a big payday.

Dynasty Buys

Rhamondre Stevenson

Rhamondre Stevenson is the player I will buy most of this off-season if my league mates stop being boring and trade. He came alive with Damian Harris fighting injuries all year, playing in just 11 games. With Harris set to be an unrestricted free agent, there is no possible outcome in any universe that the Patriots resign the fourth-year running back.

Stevenson played in all 17 games and totaled over 1,400 yards, whereas Harris has never eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards and only 1,000 total yards just once in four years. Stevenson also showed he can be a legit RB1 in real life and fantasy football. He had 69 receptions (fourth) on 89 targets (third) with a 17.4% target share (fourth). Stevenson was also 12th in rushing yards and seventh in receiving yards.

It is safe to say that, with Harris likely not returning, Stevenson's RB7 finish in total points and RB10 on a ppg basis are all the tools necessary to be a top-five fantasy running back.

I expect the Patriots to add a playmaker from the stacked WR class via a trade (Tee Higgins, Brandon Aiyuk) or in the NFL draft to help take pressure off Stevenson and the running attack.

D'Andre Swift

Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey are two running backs who have previously dealt with injuries. This season, they both changed the narrative of being injury prone and finished as the RB2 (CMC) and the RB4 (Barkley.

At the end of the 2023 fantasy football season, the same will be said about D'Andre Swift. To begin with, he had an up-and-down year with injuries that forced him out for a month. Jamaal Williams also had his best year as a running back with 17 rushing touchdowns, which ties him 25th all-time with a handful of others.

So, adding Williams' career year plus Swift never being fully healthy, we never got to see Swift be that RB1 everyone saw him being.

This is the perfect time to send those sweet deals to Swift managers across leagues. He missed a month and still finished top 12 in receptions, targets, and receiving yards, AND he was third in fantasy points per opportunity.

Furthermore, to sweeten the deal and have you send an offer out after reading this, Swift was one of the most efficient and flat-out best running backs in 2022.

True yards per carry: 4.9 / 5.5YPC (eighth); YPT: 6.3 (second); YCPT: 4.58 (second); YPRR: 1.78 (fifth); YPR: 8.1 (5.6YPT) 10th

D'Andre Swift was 15th on a ppg basis, and Jamaal Williams is an unrestricted free agent this off-season. Take the chance on Swift's talent and the fact that Williams might look to get a nice payday elsewhere. He has THE RB1 in 2023 very well in his range of outcomes.

DeVonta Smith

Since the 2020 season, three pairs of WR teammates have finished as WR1s in fantasy football. DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett in 2020, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in 2021, and AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith in 2022.

The Philadelphia Eagles' offense is so lethal that I believe Smith and Brown can also repeat as WR1s in 2023. That statement gives me so much confidence that I would trade a WR1 on an NFL team for Smith.

Even with Smith being the WR2 behind Brown in the offense, he and Brown each posted five WR1 weeks in 2022. Smith is more for the intermediate routes, whereas Brown possesses the big play ability,

Devonta Smith ran more routes than Brown and brought in more receptions. Although Brown is the better player, Smith is the cheaper asset in dynasty football.

With Smith/Brown/Hurts locked in for the foreseeable future, it would be wise to acquire Smith in dynasty leagues and expect similar production in 2023.

 

Dynasty Sells

Dameon Pierce

The Dameon Pierce hype season came and went faster than my hair falling off my head and me becoming bald. He was one of the most talked about players in the 2022 off-season.

Numerous people drafted him in the first round of rookie drafts after the Texans selected him. After Week 5, the Pierce truthers were entirely on board the Pierce express, but it halted rather quickly. He had three straight RB1 finishes (Weeks 3-5), then never finished as an RB1 the rest of the season. In total points, Pierce was just RB27 and the RB20 on a ppg basis.

The time to sell Pierce was then, but there is still time to flip him for a second-round pick with a stacked RB class set to step foot in the NFL.

Pierce posted just  4.4 YPC, which was good for 47th and 2.87 YCPT (23rd). Before the Texans possibly select a running back in the later rounds of the draft, trade Pierce and try to salvage a second-round pick.

Josh Jacobs

Josh Jacobs is the reigning rushing champ and had the most total yards in 2022. He has plenty left at just 24 years old and has been one of the better running backs since he entered the NFL.

Now, here is the truth. Derek Carr has stated that he is not returning as the quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, so there is uncertainty about that.

Personally, I would look to trade Jacobs for a young WR such as Chris Olave, Tee Higgins, Garrett Wilson, or even Drake London. Even if you might have to add something, it will be worth it. We all know the running back position is the most expandable, and you should not pass up on the chance to add a star WR of the next generation.

I traded Josh Jacobs in October for Chris Olave to pair him up with Ja'Marr Chase and have not regretted it once. The RB3 of the 2022 season might have a new team he is running for or a new quarterback with a new offense in 2023. Get out now while you can and maximize the return.
