In my first article of the redraft season (check out dynasty thoughts and analysis on the “Ride or Dynasty” podcast with the great JJ Wenner and Jameson Hutchison, live on Thursday evenings), we will hit on a few highly ranked EDGE players for the 2024 season. Our expert IDP team has ranked all players for the upcoming season (link to rankings hub?). In this series, our writers will break down the top tiers of players in each position, and analyze the groupings and rankings. Today, we hit the EDGE rushers, a position that can give your squad incredible upside and floor, if you hit the right players.

For today’s exercise, I have broken our top 32 ranked EDGE players into four tiers. From here, we will hit on three players in more depth; one value, one bust, and one slept on. These headers are explosive, but remember, these are only in relation to that specific tier. A tier 2 “bust” still could have a good year, but would not live up to an early-round selection. Let’s rush the passer, or pass-rushers in this case!

Value: Maxx Crosby, Las Vegas Raiders

The top EDGE (3rd IDP overall) ranked is a value? You bet he is! No defensive lineman played more snaps than Maxx Crosby in either of the last two seasons (top 7 in the two prior seasons too); no one was even within 75 snaps in either season! Elite snap production shows durability and leads to tackle production (179 over the past two years). Add in the 27 sacks in his past two seasons, and Crosby gives you an elite floor and ceiling. Christian Wilkins may steal some tackles from Crosby, but should also allow him more freedom to rush the passer.

    Bust: T.J. Watt, Pittsburgh Steelers

T.J. Watt is a surefire Hall-of-Famer, with nearly a sack per game in seven seasons played. However, he finds himself as the tier 1 bust due to age and concerns on his underlying metrics. Despite gaudy sack totals, he has been more good than great over the past three seasons. As he ages, the likelihood of his stats regressing to meet his metrics rises exponentially. He still very well could end up with 15+ sacks, but could easily fall to second fiddle to Alex Highsmith.

    Sleeper: Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns

Tier 1 is weird. EDGE1 is a value, a player coming off a 19-sack season is a bust, and now the reigning DPOY is a sleeper. Myles Garrett was a dominant force before being severely hampered in the back third of the season. The second year of Jim Schwartz’s scheme combined with added reinforcements on both sides of the ball would see a healthy Garrett potentially be IDP1 overall this season.
