The hits keep coming in the Baltimore backfield. Here I’ll give my immediate reaction and updates to the Gus Edwards injury.

Reports started coming in a few hours ago that the Baltimore Ravens were ending practice early. The reason for the sudden stoppage was back-to-back knee injuries to Marcus Peters and Gus Edwards.

The early reports are suggesting both players may have suffered season-ending ACL tears. With the Thursday night kickoff mere hours away, let’s take a quick look at the options for Edwards’ fantasy managers.

If Edwards is indeed out for the entire season, the depleted Ravens backfield gets even thinner. Williams and Trenton Cannon are the only running backs on the 53 man roster currently. Williams has seen his stock rise both due to injuries and his pre-season performance. He should be added in all formats, especially for this week. With veterans Le’Veon Bell and brand new signing Devonta Freeman on the practice squad, Williams is my bet to lead the backfield this week.

    Le’Veon Bell and Devonta Freeman

Both of these veterans’ best days are most likely behind them. That said, the Gus Edwards injury may open an opportunity for one of them to have some relevance. Considering both were initially signed to the practice squad, I would be surprised if either has significant fantasy outputs this week.

If Edwards is out for the season, I still think it is possible or even likely that the Ravens would trade for a veteran running back with some more upside. Until that happens, however, Bell and Freeman are both decent speculative adds. Don't add them if you have to drop a decent fantasy asset though.

Update: ACL Tear for Gus Edwards Confirmed

Unfortunately, we received confirmation that Edwards did in fact tear his ACL just before Thursday night kickoff. We won't see him until next season.

I am a veterinarian who has been playing fantasy football off and on since high school. About 12 years ago, I got more competitive and serious about fantasy football when I started a league with some other friends who were in vet school with me at the time. I started playing IDP about 3 years ago and have become even more obsessed with fantasy football. I have what I would call an evidence-based approach to fantasy football and love to track data in spreadsheets. I began writing for IDP Guys in the summer of 2021 and look forward to contributing to the amazing team moving forward. Thanks for reading!
