    A legend is born

Welcome to "The Monster" Week 13, now in audio format!

    The Full Monster

New for Week 13, scroll down the article and get every matchup as an audio clip. Each clip is between 10-15 minutes long. We understand some miss the old written out Monster, and we hear you... Get just the matchup you want in smaller bites pulled from the podcast.

In The Monster, we look at playing time, production, injuries and waivers because of them, changes in role or demotion (Daniel Sorensen, Jaylon Smith, etc) and we'll follow the ebbs and flows of the season in an effort to make sure you have the best IDP producers starting for your defense every week and don't miss any crucial information.

If things didn’t go how we thought they would we’ll try and figure out why that was. If someone we’ve never heard of went off for a massive week, we’ll find out if they’re worth picking up on waivers or if they’re just barely playing and just lucked into a sack or splash play. We’ll follow up on weird or iffy situations. I'll get that information from beat writers and whatever else I can find to connect the dots.

We'll also use sources such as PFF, NFLGSIS, Pro Football Reference, and smart people in the IDP community as well. This is the one place you can come every week to learn everything you need to know in regards to all things FFIDP. By the end of the audio, you'll know what you need to make the best decisions for upcoming matchups.

    IDP Analyst Super Squad

Between The Monster, @Mike_Woellert and his three-down linebacker article, listening to The IDP Show podcast, the various information published weekly from our site (idpguys.org), and other excellent FFIDP sources out there (Gary Davenport, Gary Van Dyke, Justin Varnes, Jon Macri, The IDP Show, 4 for 4 IDP, etc), you should be completely locked in for your individual defensive players across the board.

If you're short on time, though, my mission with this content is to get "all of it in one place" so this is a good start. Remember the "why" is just as important as "what," so with all that in mind, let's get into it.

The Monster Week 13, Questions and Answers

(The complete audio is above, and is also available on the IDP Guys podcast feed.)

    Thursday Night Football

    Cowboys at Saints
    The Questions

We got things started Thursday night with the Cowboys desperately looking to right the ship against the Saints. For Dallas we may have gotten DeMarcus Lawrence (DE) back this week, he was designated to return with Randy Gregory (DE) not far behind him so we'll check on that for sure. And if that was the case what did it do for the role Micah Parsons (LB) played this week?

As for the Saints, we'll check on Marcus Davenport (DE) and see if he was able to go this week after missing the Thanksgiving game with an injury and beyond that, we'll see what there is to see.

    The Answers

    Sunday Early Lineup

    Buccaneers at Falcons
    The Questions

The Bucs faced off against the Falcons in a divisional showdown. For the Bucs we saw Carlton Davis (CB) was designated to return from IR this week so did we get him and if so how much did he play? Also, Devin White (LB) was dinged up last week so was he able to play his normal snaps and do what we needed him to do?

In Atlanta, we got a last-second inactive for Deion Jones (LB) last week and a surprise monster game from replacement Mychal Walker (LB), how did that play out this week, and what's the long term prognosis there for the other inside linebacker slot next to Foye Oluokun (LB)? Many important questions to be answered here with playoffs right around the corner.

    The Answers

    Cardinals at Bears
    The Questions

The Cardinals faced off against the Bears this week in the windy city. For Arizona most things are set in stone here but we'll check on the usual suspects, Chandler Jones (OLB), was he able to produce for us this week and how did the rest of the pass rush look without JJ Watt (DE) for yet another week?

As for Chicago, the big question, and one of the bigger questions this week, was in regards to Roquan Smith (LB). After a hamstring injury during the Thanksgiving game was he able to go this week and if not was it Alec Ogletree (LB) or Christian Jones (LB) as the better waiver wire linebacker option?

Beyond that, it's mostly stable. We'll put on some surgical gloves and really reach up in there and dig around real good.

    The Answers

    Chargers at Bengals
    The Questions

The Chargers and Bengals faced off in a battle of young quarterbacks and a pair of absolutely loaded WR corps. For the Chargers we're really just looking at the inside linebacker situation, with Kyzir White (LB) and Drue Tranquil (LB) leading the way recently is Kenneth Murray (LB) an afterthought or back in the fold after this week?

In Cincinnati, we have a very stable defense week to week. Were the usual suspects were able to rebound and have a productive week for us after a down game against the Steelers in Week 12? There won't be much to see here unless the injury grim reaper strikes and hopefully, that won't be the case.

    The Answers

    Vikings at Lions
    The Questions

In Detroit this week we got a divisional showdown between the "on the edge of the playoff hunt" Vikings and the "swirling the toilet" Lions. For the Lions, we'll look at things like if they let Tracy Walker (S) play every snap again this week or not and the injury status of Jalen Reeves Maybin (LB) who was dinged up during the Thanksgiving day game.

For the Vikings, the biggest issue is definitely the health of Anthony Barr (OLB) who left last week's game with a hamstring injury. That meant we got Nick Vigil (LB) again and we could have him for the duration of the injury, however long that lasts. We'll definitely check on that as well as the playing time and production for D.J. Wonnum (DE).

Wonnum has emerged as the best defensive end option after the season-ending injury to Danielle Hunter (DE) and the loss of Everson Griffen (DE) due to mental health reasons.

    The Answers

    Giants at Dolphins
    The Questions

Next, we got the Giants and suddenly relevant-again Dolphins down in sunny Florida. For the Giants, the biggest issue recently has been the Covid IR stint that Logan Ryan (S) has been dealing with. Was he able to return to the lineup this week? And how is Xavier McKinney (S) doing? He's been red hot since Jabrill Peppers (S) went to IR earlier this season.

As for the Dolphins, we're really just giving this a once over and check the normal producers, not much has changed week to week except basically everything as is tradition for the Dolphins. Beyond a small handful of "reliable" producers, this entire defense fluctuates wildly week to week but we'll see what there is to see.

    The Answers

    Eagles at Jets
    The Questions

In the Big Apple, we got the Eagles and Jets, were the Eagles able to recover from an upset loss to the Giants the week prior? For Philly, we'll check in on Alex Singleton (LB) and TJ Edwards (LB), the two excellent waiver wire linebackers of late, but also see when Davion Taylor (LB) is due back from that short term injury since that will very likely displace Singleton back to the bench once more.

Beyond that, most things are set in stone here. For the Jets, we'll see if the injury to Quincy Williams (LB) was able to go this week after a thigh bruise took him out of last week's game earlier than we all wanted. Then, we'll see if Elijah Riley (S) maintained his position as the other starting safety next to Ashtyn Davis (S) or if that hamster wheel kept spinning. Some good information to be had from this one here.

    The Answers

    Colts at Texans
    The Questions

Out in Houston, we got another divisional showdown between the Colts and Texans. For the Colts most things are pretty stable but DeForest Buckner (DT) was dinged up last game so we'll check and make sure he was able to play his normal snaps.

For the Texans, there has been much fluctuation all season but we'll check on the inside linebackers and the safety situation since both of those have been moving quite a bit recently. Beyond that, we'll see what there is to see and find out any waiver wire moves from whatever hand the injury grim reaper deals us this week.

    The Answers

    Sunday Afternoon Lineup

    Washington Football Team at Raiders
    The Questions

In a battle of two teams that both won last week and are both on the edge of the playoff hunt, we had a couple of defenses that are mostly stable with a couple of minor things to check on. For the Football Team, we'll check on the inside linebackers and safeties as is tradition but both units have been a model of stability in recent weeks.

As for the Raiders, we'll basically just look and see if we got Maxx Crosby (DE) or Minn Crosby (DE) this week. Beyond that, unless the injury grim reaper gets us we'll probably be business as usual with this one.

    The Answers

    Jaguars at Rams
    The Questions

Out in sunny Los Angeles, we got the Rams and Jags with a chance for the Rams to get their season back heading in the right direction. For the Rams, we'll see which safety and ILB is the better option. And we'll learn precisely nothing new, just like every week.

We'll also check on Greg Gaines (DT), the replacement defensive tackle who played an absurd amount of snaps last week as he took over for Sebastian Joseph Day (DT) who went to IR recently.

For the Jags, we got an injury to Damien Wilson (LB) last week so we'll see if he was able to return to action in this one or if Shaq Quarterman (LB) took his place and was a waiver wire linebacker option this week.

    The Answers

    Ravens at Steelers
    The Questions

Down in Pittsburgh, we got a physical affair between the Ravens and Steelers. For the Ravens, did Josh Bynes (LB) continue to see a decrease in playing time and therefore production as Patrick Queen (LB) continues to flourish in his new position on the defense? Was Calais Campbell (DE) able to return to action this week?

For the Steelers, did we get TJ Watt (OLB) back from Covid IR in time for kickoff? Or did he pass on the shot and sacrifice two weeks of game checks because he did his own research? What's going on with Joe Haden (CB) and when will he return to our streaming CB options? Some very important questions to answer in this one.

    The Answers

    49ers at Seahawks
    The Questions

In yet another divisional showdown this week we got the reeling Seahawks and the suddenly dangerous Niners. For the Seahawks, we'll give it a once over but this defense is very stable overall. The same can't be said for the Niners who lost not only Fred Warner (LB) for at least one week, more likely two, but Dre Greenlaw (LB) as well and to the same injury he just got back from.

Were either of these excellent inside linebacker options able to play this week? If not, who was the other waiver wire linebacker option besides the obvious and excellent Azeez Al Shaair (LB)? That last question is easily one of the top three most important answers this week.

    The Answers

    Sunday Night Football

    Broncos at Chiefs
    The Questions

Sunday night we got the Broncos and Chiefs in front of a national audience. For the Broncos we'll confirm that Baron Browning (LB) was still the best option at inside linebacker this week and we got the return of Bradley Chubb (OLB) last week, not many snaps but he was back, so how did he do this week and how much did he play?

Also, is Kyle Fuller (CB) still in the good graces of the coaching staff after being on the outside looking in during the middle part of the season and having a recent return to form, playing time, and production. For the Chiefs, we'll look at the inside linebacker corps, see a giant mess and then immediately move on.

Beyond that, we'll see what there is to see. Other than the dumpster fire that is the ILB situation, most things are settled here in Kansas City.

    The Answers

    Monday Night Football

    Patriots at Bills
    The Questions

Finally, Monday night we got a truly excellent matchup between the Patriots and Bills. The Patriots have reverted to their 2001 form. The bipolar Bills have been up and down this season but still are more than capable of scoring many points. For the Patriots, will they ever let JC Jackson (CB) play anything North of 75% of snaps a week? Beyond that, we'll check the usual suspects.

For the Bills, we lost Tre'Davious White (CB) for the season during the Thanksgiving game and got Dane Jackson (CB) as the replacement. Did that hold for this week? If not, who will replace White at his corner slot for the remainder of the season? Beyond that, this defense is a model of stability but we'll give it a once over as is tradition.

Being a firm believer in "you should know if the person you're taking advice from actually knows or wins anything" I'd like to present exhibit A: I have a diamond rating in Yahoo (976) with 29 plus titles in redraft/dynasty across Yahoo, Sleeper, Fantrax and MFL and an additional 57 plus 2nd/3rd place in redraft/dynasty, same platforms. I also play in and have won several all-IDP leagues. I started playing FanDuel with a free entry and have won almost a grand since. I've also won many leagues on the draft app (RIP Draft App, we miss you) and play the maximum number of free college fantasy leagues on Yahoo every year as well with 3 titles and 9 trophies in just two years of playing before Yahoo discontinued those leagues. My profile includes multiple titles in survivor and pick em leagues as well. I was a finalist in the 2021/22 IDP Guys Invitational and the best ball tournament. Also a MFL & Sleeper best ball & eliminator degenerate with many titles there as well. I just started playing All-22 this season and I would bet the mortgage I'll be good at that too. (Update, I did fine, 9-5 first season and made playoffs). What does all that mean? Nothing except when I do something I tend to overdo it. I have been at this for a long time though so I'll help you with your IDP roster and questions however I can whenever I can.
