In such a strong wide receiver class, there is bound to be some talent that slides through the cracks. Romeo Doubs is that guy.

The wide receiver class for the 2022 NFL Draft is stacked once again. There are potentially six or seven wide receivers that could be drafted in the first round. I’m not here to keep pounding the drum of these guys and argue over who is number one in the class. I’m here to tell you why Romeo Doubs is going to be a steal later in the draft.

There is a good chance that Doubs falls to the later rounds (fourth-seventh) in this draft, but that should not scare you away from drafting him to your fantasy rosters. He has the build, tools, and traits that could land him a potential volume role early, depending on the landing spot. Let’s take a look at what makes Doubs a potential steal.

Scouting Report

  • Wide Receiver
  • Nevada
  • 6’2″
  • 200 lbs
  • 32 1/4″ arms
  • 10 1/8″ hands

Pros

Doubs has the physical makeup of an NFL wide receiver. He stands in at 6’2″ and 200-pounds, with a long, yet thick frame. Doubs has very good muscle mass matched with a wingspan of 77 5/8″ and large hands that measured 10 1/8″.  He is an incredibly explosive athlete that forces cornerbacks to give him a large cushion when in man coverage.

Doubs thrives in yards after the catch as well and is elusive with the ball in his hands. His deep threat speed which creates the cushion opens up quick-hitting receptions, allowing him to make plays with the ball in his hands. He is incredibly hard to take down in the open field. When he gets the ball in his hands, he turns into a running back, showing very good lateral agility, burst, and long speed.

Doubs has shown an improved release at the line of scrimmage which should aid him in beating press coverage, something he did not face much of at all in college. Here is a great example where he uses quick feet at the line with great use of his hands to fight the defensive back off of him, then breaking outside to get open deep:

Here is another example of an improved release here:

Doubs has terrific ball tracking matched with strong ball skills and does a great job attacking the ball at the catch point. He is also fantastic in contested catch situations, winning most of his 50/50 balls. You can see that here with the corner route in the end-zone:

Cons

Doubs has a bit of a limited route tree, having won most of his routes with his speed on go routes. He seems a bit stiff-hipped and could work on his footwork setting up his breaks. Doubs seemed to have issues with concentration drops early in his collegiate career, though his drop rate decreased in 2021.

His ability to separate on his intermediate routes is a work in progress, though his improved release gives me optimism.

Summary

Doubs reminds me a lot of Jakobi Meyers, but with elite speed. He is developmental as a route runner but has showcased fantastic hands. The fact that Doubs has improved on his footwork and release at the line of scrimmage proves to me that Doubs can easily improve in this area. He has traits that cannot be taught, that is dense size as well as elite in-line speed.

Doubs will likely fall in the draft a bit, due to the position being so deep. He was just a standout at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, showing out against the top seniors in his draft class. If you are looking for some late-round fantasy rookie draft gems, Romeo Doubs could be a steal. You could likely land him in the 5th round or later.

Top Landing Spots: Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, and Las Vegas Raiders
