Welcome to the first rookie breakdown article! We are starting with the most important IDP position (in many formats), the rookie linebacker! The 2024 rookie linebacker for IDP fantasy football are generally seen as a weak class for dynasty rookie rankings. However, there are still many interesting names for this draft class. We will break down the top rookie linebacker draft picks for the nfl draft into various buckets, and then I will rank them at the end of the article! To note, within the tiers themselves, players are listed in alphabetical order.

Top Rookie IDP LB Rankings

AKA The Dudes

Edgerrin Cooper, TAMU

Payton Wilson, NCSU

Edgerrin Cooper is the full package at LB, albeit more than a bit raw. He is explosive to the ball (which is a negative at times, as he is over-aggressive in choosing lanes and making tackles) and violent through contact with potential blockers and ball carriers. While raw in coverage, he has shown a knack for it. With some coaching, he could be a top-tier LB in the league. He is an Ernest Jones (LB1 in our Dynasty rankings, link to Porg’s article) level blitzer and rusher, with great zone and spy eyes. 

Payton Wilson is a highly versatile linebacker, who saw about a quarter of his snaps on the line. Wilson is a great tackler, has great eyes in coverage, is good off the edge, has elite pursuit, and is always around the ball. If he stays healthy (two season-ending injuries), he could be a legitimate team LB1. His coverage skills, speed, and nose for the ball are reminiscent of (and himself, check out Billy’s interview with Wilson here!) my fellow Wyoming Cowboy and his fellow Wilson, Logan Wilson.
